presidents and my stupidity

i like to read biographies of our Presidents. aileen says it's extremely boring, which i find ironic given who it's coming from (but i still love her!), but nonetheless, i find it quite fascinating.

so i started reading 'american lion' today, a biography about andrew jackson, and decided to give aileen a mini-quiz on who our first 8 presidents were:

me: do you know who our 6th president was?
aileen: no clue. jackson?
me: can you name our first 8 presidents?
aileen: washington... um.... adams?
me: oh my gosh. how embarrassing. you don't know who our second president is?
aileen: um... isn't it adams? i think?
me: oh. my. goodness. aileen. how could you not know our second president. please.

me berating her goes on for quite a while. i was so confident, especially given the fact that i read a biography about adams, that he was not the second president.

aileen: fine. then tell me.
me: washington, jefferson, adams, madison, monroe, adams, jackson, van buren.
aileen: ohhh... yeah, jefferson. i thought he was the third.
me: no way. second. can't believe you didn't know that. unbelievable. you are so un-american. you need to go back to first grade. i am SO going to embarrass you on tell everyone about this!

so after i continue reading, something hit me. like that feeling you just forgot something important back at the hotel room.

i thought to myself: "oh.... craaaap.....i think jefferson is our third..."

as soon as we had internet access on our plane, i went online and searched the order of our presidents. indeed, adams was #2. i was so embarrassed. after some debate on whether to correct aileen or to let her think i was right, i decied to wake aileen up, and then told her she was right. adams was our second president, and that i was super embarrassed for being so mean to her about it.

aileen: you can apologize to me now you know.
me: i am still so embarrassed... i am so sorry. i am so so so sorry.

i never thought it would be possible to see the look of revenge and bliss at the same time, but i saw it tonight.
